What do you see FIRST? Brain teaser reveals the most respected part of your personality

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A new brain teaser reveals the most respected aspects of your personality. The puzzle features images that can be interpreted in different ways, depending on your personal experiences, traits and mental state. Hidden in the picture is a lion, panther and bunch of dandelions, and the one you see first means you are either a natural-born leader, a problem solver or have a strong sense of conviction. The puzzle features images that can be interpreted in different ways, depending on your personal experiences, traits and mental state. Did you see a lion, panther or dandelions first?

Grounding for Artificial Intelligence

Liu, Bing

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

A core function of intelligence is grounding, which is the process of connecting the natural language and abstract knowledge to the internal representation of the real world in an intelligent being, e.g., a human. Human cognition is grounded in our sensorimotor experiences in the external world and subjective feelings in our internal world. We use languages to communicate with each other and the languages are grounded on our shared sensorimotor experiences and feelings. Without this shard grounding, it is impossible for us to understand each other because all natural languages are highly abstract and are only able to describe a tiny portion of what has happened or is happening in the real world. Although grounding at high or abstract levels has been studied in different fields and applications, to our knowledge, limited systematic work at fine-grained levels has been done. With the rapid progress of large language models (LLMs), it is imperative that we have a sound understanding of grounding in order to move to the next level of intelligence. It is also believed that grounding is necessary for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This paper makes an attempt to systematically study this problem.

The Age of Goggles Has Arrived

The Atlantic - Technology

"Vision Pro feels familiar, yet it's entirely new." That's how Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, introduced the company's new computer goggles at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday. The Vision Pro headset, which resembles a glass scuba mask with a fabric head strap, seamlessly blends the real and digital worlds, Cook said. But the product's name, which could just as easily describe a brand of contact-lens solution, hints at a challenge. Familiar yet entirely new, natural but augmented: If goggles really are the future of computing, they will have to overcome a bevy of conflicting sentiments. As you might expect, Apple's product is slick.

MasonNLP+ at SemEval-2023 Task 8: Extracting Medical Questions, Experiences and Claims from Social Media using Knowledge-Augmented Pre-trained Language Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In online forums like Reddit, users share their experiences with medical conditions and treatments, including making claims, asking questions, and discussing the effects of treatments on their health. Building systems to understand this information can effectively monitor the spread of misinformation and verify user claims. The Task-8 of the 2023 International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation focused on medical applications, specifically extracting patient experience- and medical condition-related entities from user posts on social media. The Reddit Health Online Talk (RedHot) corpus contains posts from medical condition-related subreddits with annotations characterizing the patient experience and medical conditions. In Subtask-1, patient experience is characterized by personal experience, questions, and claims. In Subtask-2, medical conditions are characterized by population, intervention, and outcome. For the automatic extraction of patient experiences and medical condition information, as a part of the challenge, we proposed language-model-based extraction systems that ranked $3^{rd}$ on both subtasks' leaderboards. In this work, we describe our approach and, in addition, explore the automatic extraction of this information using domain-specific language models and the inclusion of external knowledge.

RedHOT: A Corpus of Annotated Medical Questions, Experiences, and Claims on Social Media

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present Reddit Health Online Talk (RedHOT), a corpus of 22,000 richly annotated social media posts from Reddit spanning 24 health conditions. Annotations include demarcations of spans corresponding to medical claims, personal experiences, and questions. We collect additional granular annotations on identified claims. Specifically, we mark snippets that describe patient Populations, Interventions, and Outcomes (PIO elements) within these. Using this corpus, we introduce the task of retrieving trustworthy evidence relevant to a given claim made on social media. We propose a new method to automatically derive (noisy) supervision for this task which we use to train a dense retrieval model; this outperforms baseline models. Manual evaluation of retrieval results performed by medical doctors indicate that while our system performance is promising, there is considerable room for improvement. Collected annotations (and scripts to assemble the dataset), are available at https://github.com/sominw/redhot.

AI is Not Here to Replace Us - KDnuggets

When I heard AI could write decent code, I'll admit it: I got a little shiver down my spine. Every day it seems like AI threatens a new occupation. SEO bloggers are quaking in their boots. Artists watch with horror as users flock to Midjourney's Discord server. I've always been a proponent of the argument that technology does not remove jobs, it adds them.

What is AI Writing Text? - [AI Content]

#artificialintelligence

This website or blog productively aims at educating & empowering beginner and intermediate level digital marketers including online business owners to boost their business and marketing goals. It also promotes affiliate products or services that may benefit you as you follow along..... AI writing text is often known as AI-written text or AI-generated content which is all about a tool or software that works or is based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that is designed to produce human-like writing. AI content writers are often used in situations where the writer needs to produce lots of text and the text needs to be of high quality without much supervision. AI content writers can help human writers improve their writing by providing alternative phrases that are more persuasive or engaging which is a need of the hour in any business. AI writing text is often used by marketing departments to make sure their copy sounds authentic.

Dimensions of Diversity in Human Perceptions of Algorithmic Fairness

Grgić-Hlača, Nina, Lima, Gabriel, Weller, Adrian, Redmiles, Elissa M.

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

A growing number of oversight boards and regulatory bodies seek to monitor and govern algorithms that make decisions about people's lives. Prior work has explored how people believe algorithmic decisions should be made, but there is little understanding of how individual factors like sociodemographics or direct experience with a decision-making scenario may affect their ethical views. We take a step toward filling this gap by exploring how people's perceptions of one aspect of procedural algorithmic fairness (the fairness of using particular features in an algorithmic decision) relate to their (i) demographics (age, education, gender, race, political views) and (ii) personal experiences with the algorithmic decision-making scenario. We find that political views and personal experience with the algorithmic decision context significantly influence perceptions about the fairness of using different features for bail decision-making. Drawing on our results, we discuss the implications for stakeholder engagement and algorithmic oversight including the need to consider multiple dimensions of diversity in composing oversight and regulatory bodies.

First-of-its-kind humanoid robot deployed in nursing home to help patients with Alzheimer's

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Humanoid robots have been deployed in a Minnesota nursing home to care for patients with early-stage Alzheimer's. These robots, developed by a team of researchers at the University of Minnesota, are equipped to assist individuals with their emotional, physical and cognitive health - are believed to be the first in the US to focus on caring for patients with dementia. 'I am extremely excited to be making history with my students by deploying humanoid robots in nursing homes to help care for our elderly,' said Arshia Khan, a professor of computer science at the University of Minnesota at Duluth's Swenson College of Science and Engineering. The humanoid robots are meant to provide a wide range of support and help patients who are experiencing early stage Alzheimer's. One robot is a two-foot-tall model called NAO, and the other one stands four feet and is known as Pepper - but Khan emphasizes that the machine's will supplement human workers rather than replace them.
